The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) 2020 Operation Safe Driver Week is a week-long driving safety initiative that encourages and enforces safe driving standards for both commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers and everyday drivers. This year, Operation Safe Driver Week runs from July 12, 2020, through July 18, 2020, with an emphasis on speeding and unsafe driving behaviors.

The legalization of marijuana varies by state, causing employers to request safety-sensitive carve-outs to help them enforce safety in the workplace for positions that pose a risk. As state medicinal and recreational marijuana legislation pass, it’s vital that employers remain up-to- date on any recent changes that affect safety-sensitive carve-outs so as to not compromise safety, while also understanding their liability protections. New York City, for example, recently updated a rule that adds six new safety-sensitive positions to the carve-out included in the ordinance.

The Motion Picture Compliance Solutions (MPCS) exemption to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse Rule has been granted after stating that it didn’t fit their industry’s model. The exemption is for its members who employ commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders providing transportation to or from a theatrical, commercial, or television production site and are subject to drug and alcohol testing.

The Governor of Oklahoma, Kevin Stitt, signed a bill on May 21, 2020, that would dedicate $300,000 towards a THC breath test pilot program. House Bill 4164 features a pilot program that would be used by state and local law enforcement to help solve problems with THC detection windows in current drug testing methods.
